Calcium hardness is the measure of calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in the water.
If the salts content is low then the water is considered 'soft', if the salts level is high then the water is considered 'hard'. Calcium hardness levels can vary considerably throughout the country. The ideal level for swimming pool water is dependent upon the pool shell finish, as shown below: Marbline/Tiled = 200 - 275mg/l (ppm) Liner/Fibreglass = 175 - 225mg/l (ppm) Calcium hardness levels below the ideal levels above can lead to the damage of spa shell finish and support equipment. BioGuard Balance Pak 300 is used to raise low calcium hardness to within the correct range. High calcium hardness levels can lead to the formation of scale deposits on the shell finish, within pipework and on heater elements. Other problems associated with a high calcium hardness are cloudy and dull looking water. In areas where the source water has a high level of calcium hardness, BioGuard Stain & Scale Inhibitor should be used to prevent the precipitation of scale. Most test kits used by private pool owners do not have the facility to test for calcium hardness. We recommend that every four weeks you take a pool water sample to your BioGuard Dealer for full analysis.
